Vintage Nancy Crow

I have always loved PARTS of this quilt, and think it was overworked, overdesigned and over busy compared to her later work when she was obviously not trying so hard.
Look especially at the stripes and then see the solids anchoring the design.
This one is an improvement over the first Lady of Guadalupe. It is so much less busy. Love the colors and think I could use my stripes effectively with solids like this.
I am so unused to using prints...
Beige??? She just had to use that fabric.
This is the supremo beauty, and while she pieced her stripes and made a huge work, I will use printed stripes in place of pieced ones and see what I can do with something similar. These are after all 40 years old already!

How Things Have Changed!

I can't believe it took me THIS LONG to finally sit comfortably at my sewing machine! It is so much easier to enjoy piecing and then quilting when my shoulders are relaxed and at ease.
These photos show I am at full messy working mode and have tweaked the arrangement to suit me better. It turns out that I cut and press standing up better than I would sitting so I moved that higher table to my right. My fabric was arranged neatly a few hours ago, but that didn't last. ha!

I had this sketch already so I used it as my jumping off point. I am thinking of making this layout several times (I hope) and perhaps you can see that this rectangle has a center line which makes it two squares more or less.
Now that I look at this again, I see a place where I need to match a seam...I think I can do it, with a little moving and trimming.
Here it is fixed..

The blue green purple color scheme is truly new for me. But I had more stripes with those colors so I went with them. Future panels might go warmer, we'll see.
So all day today I thought about going to the quilt show and I have decided against it. I would much rather spend a whole day at your house, sometime, or have you here. I looked up the Horne sewing cabinets and while they are lovely, I just feel like I have something right now that is working.

Compare and Contrast

So what I figured I could do to save this was resort to my fave process called Stacks. I lifted apart the parts and inserted fabric underneath, cutting away the under-layer, and then added more details to fill out the composition. I don't like to have things floating without some connection to the outer edges. I kept a tiny bit of curve in the pieces to keep it from being too static.

I used this old piece Allegro as my guide...nothing new in my head, so getting it done was all I cared about.
What really works about Allegro is the fabric, and that's where The Bridge is lacking. Not nearly as thrilling to me without all the changes in color.
